Cruising is one of the most exciting ways to travel, combining the ease of an all-inclusive resort with the thrill of exploring multiple destinations. However, costs can increase quickly if you don’t plan strategically. Whether you’re a first-time cruiser or a seasoned traveler, here are some insider tips on how to cruise smarter.

Booking a Cruise

Book early or last minute for the best deals

Timing is everything when it comes to cruise pricing. Booking early—typically six to 12 months out or even earlier—can lock in lower prices and give you access to perks like cabin upgrades or onboard credits. On the flip side, if you have a flexible schedule, booking a last-minute cruise can also score you significant discounts as cruise lines try to fill unsold cabins. Given the increased popularity of cruising, these deals may be harder to find but they are still out there.  Either way, watching prices and acting strategically can save you hundreds.

Choose the right cabin to maximize value

Your cabin choice plays a big role in both your comfort and your wallet. Interior cabins are the most budget-friendly option and are perfect if you plan to spend most of your time exploring the ship and ports. Oceanview and balcony cabins come with higher price tags but can be worth it depending on the length of your cruise and personal preferences. If you’re on a tight budget, stick with an inside cabin and use your savings for experiences ashore.

Take advantage of cruise line promotions and discounts

Cruise lines frequently run limited-time promotions, especially during “wave season” (January through March). Look for deals offering reduced deposits, free upgrades, onboard credit, kids sail free, or included gratuities. Additionally, many lines offer discounts for past cruisers, military members, seniors, and residents of certain states, so be sure to check for applicable promotions before you book.

Use a travel agent or cruise specialist for exclusive savings

While it’s tempting to book online, using a travel agent or cruise specialist can unlock exclusive deals and amenities not available to the general public. Many agents have access to group rates, onboard credits, or perks like free specialty dining or spa treatments. Plus, a good agent can help you navigate cancellation policies, re-book if prices drop, and offer insider knowledge about your ship and itinerary.

Where to Save Money

Avoid overpriced shore excursions—book independently

Cruise line-sponsored shore excursions offer convenience and security in that the ship will generally wait for you if you’re running late from your tour but usually come with a premium price. In many ports, you can find the same tours for a fraction of the cost by booking directly with local operators or through reputable online platforms. Just make sure you leave enough time to get back to the ship since the ship  won’t wait if you’re late!

Skip the cruise line’s drink package (or choose wisely)

Drink packages can seem like a great deal, but they often require you to drink several alcoholic beverages daily to break even. If you’re more of a casual drinker, you may save money by buying drinks a la carte or taking advantage of happy hour specials onboard. Some cruise lines also allow you to bring a limited amount of wine or non-alcoholic beverages onboard, which can help you avoid bar prices entirely.

Be strategic about Wi-Fi and onboard extras

Wi-Fi on cruise ships is notoriously expensive and can be slow, depending on your ship and destination. Consider unplugging and enjoying a digital detox. If you need to stay connected, look for discounted Wi-Fi packages offered pre-cruise or on embarkation day. The same goes for other onboard extras like specialty dining, spa treatments, and fitness classes—booking these in advance or during promotions can help you avoid paying full price.

Bring your own essentials to avoid overpriced onboard purchases

Forgotten items like sunscreen, toiletries, seasickness remedies, or even snacks can cost double or triple once you’re on board. Pack smart and bring your own essentials to avoid these inflated prices. Many cruise lines even allow passengers to bring limited quantities of bottled water or soft drinks, saving you from paying for them on the ship.

How to Maximize the Travel Experience

Travel during shoulder season for lower prices

If your schedule allows, traveling during the shoulder season—just before or after peak times—can yield significant savings. For example, cruising the Caribbean in late April or early November, or Alaska in May or September, often means fewer crowds and lower prices. Plus, you might enjoy better weather and more personalized service as ships tend to be less full during these times.

Plan your transportation to the port in advance

Last-minute airport transfers and parking near the cruise port can be expensive. Instead, plan your transportation ahead of time. Compare shuttle services, public transportation, rideshares, or even one-way car rentals to find the most affordable option. If you’re staying at a hotel the night before, they may offer cruise packages which include your parking and shuttle to the port.  If you’re driving, look for offsite parking lots that offer shuttle service to the port—they’re often much cheaper than official cruise terminal parking.
